Recently in fine weather Claire and Alex Lyons ran the Salt settlers 6 hour challenge. They managed 5 laps, racking up just over a half marathon. The event was brilliant and held at Budleigh Salterton.

Roger Hayes reported from a joint family holiday which wouldn’t have been complete without donning the royal blue vest and taking part in a race. Race preparations were slightly interrupted by the Eubank Benn fight the night before, when water would have been the sensible option!

The five Trotters taking part woke up to a beautiful cloudless sky and a lovely warm 23 degrees. They had a 45 minute drive to Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Tenerife’s capital City, from their Costa Adeje resort where they joined the other 3500 runners.

The half marathon started at 9am. Stan Hayes, making a welcome return to the Trotters, ran a steady race on what was an out and back course with an extra loop within in the city. The course wasn’t quite as flat as he had expected but that didn’t seem to affect his pace as he ran his fastest mile between mile 12 and 13, crossing the line in 1:42:04. Nigel Barnett was the other Trotter representative. Those celebrations the night before caught up with Nigel and he struggled in the heat. He was thankful for the finish line and his time of 2:00:05.

Three ladies took part in the unusual distance of 8K which started at 9:45am. Jess Hayes, also making a welcome return to the Trotters, was the first one to cross the finish line in 49:32. This was particularly impressive as Jess had only run once in the past two months! Next in was her mum, Caroline Hayes, who enjoyed her rare outing on the racing front. Caroline finished in 49:57. Completing the line up was Abbie Barnett who was running in her first ever solo race. Abbie struggled with the heat; the temperature had risen to 25 degrees by the end. At 5K, a shop proved far too tempting for her; she eventually rejoined the masses with a bottle of Ribena in one hand and a new outfit in the other! She dug in and got it done, finishing in 1:06:47.

The five of them were cheered on by the rest of the family and friends who were holidaying with them. A night of further celebrations were on the cards!

Sue Tremlett did the infamous Drogo 10 race. "A perfect weather for running, no rain and the trails weren’t too muddy. A bit overcast so views not as good as they can be but still a stunning route. First 10-miler for me and indeed longest run since January as I’ve been on the injury bench pretty much since then. Very happy with my time of just over 2 hours as I felt I walked much more than in the past on this course. South West Road Runners put on a good race and we had a nice wooden coaster on finishing. Jo Randall also ran (really well!) and a new member called Jasper.
